When Wolfram Alpha first launched it was hyped as another “Google killer”.

It’s allegedly a search engine.

Given our modern terminology we could call it an answer engine.

Yet it fails at both sadly.

I tested it in 2026 again and it still struggles with basic queries.

Thus I also suggest plenty of other alternative search engines.

Especially make sure to look up the very end.

Google killers usually die

Over the decades many new search engines were hailed as a “Google killer”.

Yet most of them went defunct.

Some of them were truly promising. Blekko for example.

Yet most others did not live up to the hype at all.

Sadly Wolfram Alpha seems to be another example of this phenomenon.

Do you remember the last few much hyped Google killers in the search arena? Not? Well, I do.

• Wikia has been discontinued after just a few months.
  
• Powerset had been promising but it has been bought by Microsoft and subsequently its development stopped.
  
• Cuil that was meant to be bigger and better has silently vanished altogether after serving low quality results.
  
• Blekko competed with Google quite successfully for a few years.
  
  Then they changed their business model and got acquired finally by IBM only to be disbanded.

My favorite search engine for many years was DuckDuckGo.

Yet it only rebrands Bing results and makes them more private.

Then I’ve found other viable alternative search engines and interfaces like Ecosia, Startpage, Brave, Bare.

The first two also rely mostly on Google.

Brave has its own index and Bare seems to provide another UI for that.

So neither is perfect.

Thus I’m always looking for alternatives to the Google monopoly.

They are all niche offerings despite their many benefits and advantages over Google (think private, clean, objective search).

So I wanted to give WA another try.

Especially as I stumbled upon the blog of the founder.

As always the first search query I test is [seo].

It’s not only due to the fact that I cover SEO here on seo2.blog!

SEO is also a highly competitive space and many spammers also try to gain ground there.

Last but not least I know what should show and rank on top there.

When I tested it the last time WA did not even recognize the term and offered something completely unrelated as an answer:

So in 2026 I tried it again assuming that in the AI chatbot age they will be able to provide a useful answer.

It didn’t happen.

The query got categorized correctly as SEO at least this time.

Yet the results showed only one site: seobook.com – just the website address, not a link!

The website was popular in the SEO industry like decades ago.

It hasn’t even been updated or redesigned ever since it seems. It does not even have https yet.

No definition of SEO, no quotes from reputable sources, not even one from SEO book.

Last time I talked online with the author of the site I was a big fan in the past he sounded weird to say the least.

He was spewing hate against immigrants and accusing me of things I don’t even remember because they were so illogical.

At least I know its location now thanks to WA haha.

Did you notice how similar the two screenshots taken many years apart look btw.?

The interface still hasn’t changed much from the early days of WA.

It’s still cluttered and hard to read using small type.

My honest WolframAlpha review

OK, so what about Wolfram Alpha?

I just tested it again and the results are still abysmal.

I’d really love to see a search engine that ends the Google monopoly.

Yet sorry, Wolfram Alpha is not even a real search engine.

Don’t waste your time

WolframAlpha is a waste of time and no threat to Google.

Here is why.

It has a bizarre name.

I live in Germany where the weird name Wolfram stems from. 

Even here it sounds strange and is difficult to pronounce.

What about the rest of the world?

Obviously the guys at Wolfram Alpha (WA from now on) couldn’t afford to ask a linguist about a name.

It doesn’t work.

I couldn’t even find myself when searching for my name!

It only suggests other people having the same first name and shows me some stats on its usage.

I have optimized for my name for the 25 years. WA finds nada.

Offers intriguing but useless information.

According to other bloggers you can find out lots of intriguing but useless information you didn’t really ask for.

When you want to play around you might want to use it, not for search though.

There are not enough choices.

In spite of the fact that most searchers click the first result as the most accurate you still expect a choice of at least several sites.

Not on WA. You get one answer. It’s not a good one though in many cases.

Most searches are not “questions or calculations”.

Yet WA seems to be made mostly for these use cases.

Most searches are still simple words or word combinations.

Only a small percentage are real questions.

Do you remember Ask? Yeah, it’s a search engine that focused on answering questions. It’s dead by now.

New AI based answer engines exist but they offer a wealth of information compared to WA.

It shows nonsense or dictionary results for common terms.

WA does not know what you talking about.

Or it offers dictionary results instead (test the query [design]).

The first thing I always search for on new search engines is SEO.

In case an engine manages to find the best results there it will also manage elsewhere.

WA doesn’t even know what SEO is!

I thought it was maybe my fault searching for such an exotic term like SEO.

Thus I tried a more popular query like “design”. What did I get?

I got a dictionary and thesaurus definition and no search results.

I know what design is! I don’t need a “search engine” for it. Sorry.

Other Google alternatives offer far better results.

Try DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, Startpage or even Yandex.

All other still existing search engines offer better results than Wolfram Alpha.

I showed you why there really good alternatives for some queries by now.

Why the hell should I use a broken dictionary instead?

What is Wolfram Alpha and why use it then?

Alpha is usually geek speak and means in “natural language” rather “in early stages of development”.

Beta in comparison is already running properly but somewhat expected to still be buggy.

Sometimes alpha simply means “I’m broken”. Yes, it still is.

Wolfram is still in its alpha stage, a very early prototype it seems, even many years after its launch.

Usually the first impression counts when it comes to software.

When it’s broken you won’t use it in future (when it’s fixed) either, especially if you have one that works.

Why bother with WolframAlpha then?

Wolfram Alpha is another misfire from same hype machine that offered us several failed Google killers.

I’d like to cite Public Enemy here: “Don’t believe the hype!”

Btw.: To make it even more ludicrous WA doesn’t get even the basic definitions right.

I wonder how they could survive for so long.

Whatever Wolfram Alpha is: it’s not a search engine and it’s not a threat to Google.

It’s a waste of time for most people. It may be fun for geeks.

Yet there are much better answer engines for geeks out there.

Just the other day I discovered Odisena on r/searchengines.

It knows very well what SEO is and provides multiple quotes and sources.
