The Only 5 Social and Content SEO Blogs You Need
*
There are myriads of SEO blogs out there.
When talking about SEO most publications still focus on the small and geeky “technical SEO” niche though.
Others just embrace the larger “marketing” context and thus diffuse the influence of search and findability.
With the growing impact of social and content SEO the world of search engine optimization has substantially changed. Only a few blogs reflect this reality.
Why did I chose these blogs years ago?
By now many years ago I chose to focus on just these blogs. Why?
These blogs do not use the same terminology as me but they have a similar approach.
Indeed, I am convinced that you need only five blogs to inform yourself properly on modern SEO matters.
By showing what sources are dealing with social and content SEO I also expand the limited mainstream definition of the discipline.
1. Moz – Originally founded by Rand Fishkin and now led by his team.
Moz has been trailblazing the path of modern SEO. Moz is still one of my favorite publications with some of the most gifted writers.
2. Search Engine Land – the number one Search Marketing publication, co-founded by legendary Danny Sullivan.
He now serves as “search liaison” at Google. Full disclosure: in 2022/2023 I contributed more than a dozen articles to SEL.
3. Hubspot – Multiple authors cover all facets of SEO, even those that use different names.
Founded by Dharmesh Shah, one of the most prominent marketers there are. It’s thriving more than ever after many years.
A large team of writers covers a wide variety of topics. Some of them are officially called SEO others are probably rather described as marketing in general.
4. Problogger – The original blog of Darren Rowse, the blogging professional who excels ever since.
While Darren succeeded with many other blogs he still teaches how to blog professionally so that it makes business sense.
The blogs is less active since 2024 but the number of existing evergreen resources is more than enough already.
5. Copyblogger – One of the original blogging bloggers out there. By now it’s a whole publishing house.
Over the years Copyblogger jumped on the “content marketing” bandwagon and stayed there even though the hype is over.
Yet no matter which term you use content is one of the main aspects of search success especially in the helpful content era.
Those five are perfectly sufficient for starters.
Do you really need to “read more”?
One thing is certain: modern SEO is not just about technical intricacies.
It’s mostly about social (links, audiences, relationships) and content (creation, optimization and publishing).
You just can’t ignore those five SEO or SEO related blogs when you want to attract or build audiences.
Skip all the other thousands of publications.
Information overload won’t make you any smarter. It will just confuse you. Focus on those 5 sources.
What about this blog here? The seo2.blog is – as the name suggests – one of the most visionary sources of modern SEO expertise.
Ah, you do know that Copyblogger and Problogger aren’t SEO blogs, right?
What about http://www.SearchEngineLand.com and blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog ?
Ah Lee… you know as well as anyone that the hardest part of SEO is getting links, and the primary way to do that is with compelling content. This is different than SEO 1.0 and the days of WebPosition Gold gurus and the like, so why isn’t Copyblogger part of SEO 2.0?
The bigger question to ask, as you’ve asked before on your own blog, is what will become of SEO? Isn’t technical SEO just a small part of an overall marketing plan? In that case, I’m glad Copyblogger is not an “SEO blog,” because that means it’s built on something that will last.
OK Lee, but they are SEO 2.0 blogs! Take into account that by showing what SEO 2.0 is, based on people who practice it already, I define it step by step. I will even extend the definition of SEO inasmuch as blogs like Fadtastic will also fit in. SEO 1.0 is too narrow minded as you yourself correctly wrote.
http://www.SearchEngineLand.com and blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog are great powerful dinosaurs. They just adapt to the new sitaution without leading the new wave.
Maybe I change my mind in the course of events as Sphinn is of course SEO 2.0
Brian, you were too quick for me, but I see you have an excellent understanding of what I want to show with this list.

Most people aren’t used to the term “SEM 2.0” so they would figure you meant to say they are “WEB 2.0” blogs – until they read your blog more thoroughly.
Also, I agree with Lee – you cant leave out the blog run by the person who pretty much coined the term SEO – Danny Sullivan – Search Engine Land.
Yeah, I found the list on my own!
I don’t know how succesfull you are in business, but your art of blogging is cool ;)
regards, Marc
Brians and Lees discussion was pretty interesting. i can;t think of one good reason to disagree with Brian.
I can’t disagree with that list at all. Every one of those puts out awesome stuff.
I’d not include ProBlogger and copyblogger as SEO websites.
But rather I would include:
http://www.searchengineland.com/
and
a general subscription at Digital Points forum.
true my dear.. you selected five most useful blogs.. in between you may find some article of interest.. but for regular reading, they are not that adequate…
Good Luck. I hope that SEO 2.0 blog will be one of the most important sources of SEO 2.0 expertise. Keep it up.
